A Clinical Study of the Trochanteric Fractures of the Femur


Abstract
50 cases of the trochanteric fractures were treated at the Department of Orthopedic Surgery, Korea University Hospital, from Jan. 1975 to Dec. 1979 and the following retults were obtained.
The results were as follows.
1. Of 50 cases of trochanteric fractures, 32 cases were in man, with the peak age at the 4th decade and 18 cases in woman mostly
at the 6th decade.
2. The most common causes of the trochanteric fractures were traffic accident or fall in man, and slipping in woman,
3. 76% of the trochanteric fractures were type III and type IV according to the classification of Body and Griffin.
4. Interval from injury to operation was usually between 1 week to 3 weeks.
5. The trend of use of internal fixation device was from S-P nail and Thornton plate, and Jewett nail to sliding compression plate and screw.
6. Among 50 cases were treated with open reduction and internal fixation, and 4 cases were treated conservatively.
7. Complications were found in 100% of the group treated by conservative method, while it occurred in 19.6% of the group treated surgically.
8. Satisfactory result was obtained in 97.3% out of operative treatment, and 66. 7% out of nonoperative treatment.
